Journey To The Center Of The Earth

>> Sunday, January 25, 2009

A Journey to the Centre of the Earth (French: Voyage au centre de la Terre), also translated as A Journey to the Interior of the Earth, is a classic 1864 science fiction novel by Jules Verne.

The story involves a professor who leads his nephew and a hired guide down a volcano in Iceland to the "centre of the Earth". They encounter many adventures, including prehistoric animals and natural hazards, eventually coming to the surface again in southern Italy. The living organisms they meet reflect geological time; just as the rock layers become older and older the deeper they travel, the animals become more and more ancient the closer the characters come closer to the center. From a scientific point of view, this story has not aged quite as well as other Verne stories, since most of his ideas about what the interior of the Earth contains have since been proven wrong. However, a redeeming point to the story is Verne's own belief, told within the novel from the viewpoint of a character, that the inside of the Earth does indeed differ from that which the characters encounter. One of Verne's main ideas with his stories was also to educate the readers, and by placing the different extinct creatures the characters meet in their correct geological era, he is able to show how the world looked a long time ago, stretching from the ice age to the dinosaurs. The book was inspired by Charles Lyell's Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man of 1863. By that time geologists had abandoned a literal biblical account of Earth's development and it was generally thought that the end of the last glacial period marked the first appearance of humanity, but Lyell drew on new findings to put the origin of human beings much further back in the deep geological past. Lyell's book also influenced Louis Figuier's 1867 second edition of La Terre avant le déluge which included dramatic illustrations of savage men and women wearing animal skins and wielding stone axes, in place of the Garden of Eden shown in the 1863 edition.

The story begins on Sunday 24 May 1863, in the Lidenbrock house in Hamburg, with Professor Lidenbrock (called Professor Hardwigg in new book) rushing home to peruse his latest purchase, an original runic manuscript of an Icelandic saga written by Snorri Sturluson. While looking through the book, Lidenbrock and his nephew Axel (called Harry in the new book) find a coded note written in runic script. (This is a first indication of Verne's love for cryptology. Coded, cryptic or incomplete messages as a plot device will continue to appear in many of his works and in each case Verne goes a long way to explain not only the code used but also the mechanisms used to retrieve the original text.) Lidenbrock and Axel translate the runic characters into Latin letters, revealing a message written in a seemingly bizarre code. Lidenbrock attempts a decipherment, deducing the message to be a kind of transposition cipher; but his results are as meaningless as the original.

Professor Lidenbrock decides to lock everyone in the house and force himself and the others (Axel, and the maid, Martha) to go without food until he cracks the code. Axel discovers the answer when fanning himself with the deciphered text: Lidenbrock's decipherment was correct, and only needs to be read backwards to reveal sentences written in rough Latin. Axel decides to keep the secret hidden from Professor Lidenbrock, but after two days without food, he cannot stand the hunger and reveals the secret to his uncle. Lidenbrock translates the note, which is revealed to be a medieval note written by the (fictional) Icelandic alchemist Arne Saknussemm, who claims to have discovered a passage to the centre of the Earth via Snæfellsjökull in Iceland.

Underworld Rise of the Lycans

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is the third installment of films in the Underworld series. It is a prequel set prior to Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, covering the origins of some characters. Screen Gems released the film on January 23, 2009.

The film opens with a monologue by Sonja about the vampires and Lycans and how the vampires began enslaving the Lycans. It also shows Lucian's birth from a captive Lycan and how Viktor spared him (killing the lycan mother), making him the first Lycan able to take human form. Then it fast fowards to Lucian's teen years as he spars with a group of Death Dealers and defeats them all. Viktor, genuinely impressed, decides to make more Lycans for the benefit of the coven. Unknown to Viktor, his young daughter, Sonja, develops an attraction to the young Lycan, and Lucian becomes fond of Sonja as well.

After the title, a Death Dealer is shown riding through a small chasm while being trailed by wild Lycans that are unable to assume human form, unlike their civil brethren. When they make it to the field, more vampires begin shooting at the Lycans with crossbows. Lucian kills two Lycans just about to leap on the Dealer and kills one just as it enters the coven's walls. Viktor comes out and the Dealer is revealed to be Sonja. Viktor asks Lucian if he feels any remorse for his kind and Lucian replies with "they are mindless animals, no brethren of mine."

Lucian interferes as a slave master brutally beats a Lycan slave for transgressions. The racist slave master tells Lucian he will be there when Lucian falls. After the slaves leave, Lucian sneaks into a small tunnel to a cliff, where he meets with Sonja and they make love. Lucian asks Sonja if she would leave with him and she protests his leaving, but he is determined, and even shows her a key to his collar he made himself (the collar, due to its silver metal and deadly barbs, prevented him from transforming under Viktor's watch). He proceeds to leave and exits the tunnel, unaware that Tanis, Viktor's right-hand man, is observing him.

As human nobles come to meet with the vampire council for protection from the wild wolves in exchange for a tithe, Sonja goes out to guard them. Lucian hears the Lycans near Sonja and steals a horse and sword from a nearby Death Dealer. The Lycans attack and kill the noble and Lucian fights them. Raze is revealed to have been one of the noble's slaves. He begins to fight off Lycans and sees Lucian take off his collar and change into a Lycan. The wild Lycans back down to his howl and leave before he is shot down by Viktor's men. Sonja protests and claims he only changed to save her life. Viktor, feeling betrayed, locks Lucian away after whipping him 30 times with a three pronged chain-bladed whip.

Lucian becomes friends with Raze and speaks to Sonja about escape. He informs her that Tanis knows about their relationship and tells her to use him to get help out of the coven without her father's knowledge. Tanis agrees to assist them for Sonja's spot on the council, which would enable him to amass more political influence. He gives Lucian the key to his collar and the same night, Raze is turned into a Lycan. In the morning, Lucian escapes and kills the slave master and begins to free the other Lycans. The guards are alerted and the liberated Lycans begin to be slaughtered by the Death Dealers' large crossbolts. A majority of the Lycans are trapped and Lucian is forced to leave without them. He and Raze begin finding "conscripts" for his "army" and even travels to the lair of the wild Lycans in order to forge an alliance between the two "rival" factions of wolf.

Soul men

Soul Men is an American musical-dramedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee. It stars Samuel L. Jackson, Bernie Mac, Sharon Leal, Isaac Hayes and John Legend.

It was released on November 7, 2008. The movie is rated R by the MPAA for pervasive language and sexual content, including nudity. Bernie Mac and Isaac Hayes both died in unrelated circumstances in August 2008. Lee said the film was heavily re-edited to soften the tone of the film, as a tribute to the two actors.
Two former backup soul singers, Louis (Samuel L. Jackson) and Floyd (Bernie Mac) who have not spoken to each other in 20 years reluctantly agree to travel across the country together to a reunion concert to honor their recently deceased lead singer (played by John Legend). Cleo (Sharon Leal), a beautiful young woman who is believed to be Floyd's daughter accompanies them as a new singer.

The film received mixed reviews from critics. Based on 73 reviews, Rotten Tomatoes reported that 44% of critics stated that while Soul Men features lively performances from Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson, and some hilarious moments, it ultimately suffers from an unoriginal script. On Metacritic, another review aggretator, reported that critics gave the film an average score of 49/100, based on 23 reviews, falling under the "Mixed or average reviews" category.

As of November 14, the film has grossed $7,711,000. The film opened poorly at #6 with $5,401,605 behind Zack and Miri Make a Porno, Changeling, High School Musical 3: Senior Year, Role Models, and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa respectively.

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa

>> Wednesday, January 21, 2009

Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is a 2008 sequel to the 2005 film, Madagascar about the continuing adventures of Alex the Lion, Gloria the Hippo, Marty the Zebra and Melman the Giraffe. It is directed by Eric Darnell and written by Etan Cohen.

It was produced by DreamWorks Animation and was released on November 7, 2008. The film, distributed to theaters by Paramount Pictures, starts as prequel, showing a small part of Alex's early life, including his capture by hunters. It soon moves to shortly after the point where the original left off, with the animals deciding to return to New York. They board an airplane on Madagascar, but crash-land in Africa, where each of the central characters meets others of the same species; Alex is reunited with his parents. Problems arise, and their resolution occupies much of the remainder of the film. It stars the voices of Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, Jada Pinkett Smith, David Schwimmer, Sacha Baron Cohen, Cedric the Entertainer and Andy Richter. Also providing voices are Alec Baldwin, will.i.am, Bernie Mac, Sherri Shepherd. The previous title was "Madagascar: The Crate Escape", which was featured on a trailer with Ben Stiller. The film is rated PG for some mild crude humor. This, along with Soul Men, was Bernie Mac's last film performance. Therefore, this film is dedicated to him. The credits include a dedication: "For our friend Bernie Mac. Thanks for all the laughter."

As a cub, Alex the lion was called Alekey and was the son of Zuba (Bernie Mac), the alpha lion. Though Zuba tries to teach Alekey to be a hunter, the cub is more interested in dancing. When another lion named Makunga (Alec Baldwin) challenges Zuba to a fight for the position of alpha lion, Alekey is captured by poachers. Though Zuba tries to rescue his son, Alekey is forced into a crate. The crate falls into the ocean where it drifts to New York. There, Alekey is renamed Alex and sent to the Central Park Zoo where he grew up, meeting Gloria, Marty, and Melman there.
In the present time, Alex (Ben Stiller), Gloria (Jada Pinkett Smith), Melman (David Schwimmer), Marty (Chris Rock), the chimpanzees, King Julien, Maurice, and the penguins have fixed a crashed plane in the hopes of using it to fly back to New York (Mort manages to tag along as well, by clinging to the airplane wing). Though the plane does fly, it ends up crash-landing in Africa because of lack of fuel.
In Africa, the animals are amazed to find more of their kind. Alex is reunited with Zuba and his mother Florrie (Sherri Shephard). Marty quickly fits into a herd of zebra who all look, sound, and talk exactly like him. Melman takes on the position of Witch Doctor amongst the animals after discovering that sick giraffes have no other option but to die otherwise. Gloria, interested in finding a boyfriend, attracts the attention of a hippo named Moto Moto .

Protagonist Sidhu (Akshay Kumar) is the lowest on the totem pole, cutting vegetables at a road side food stall in Chandni Chowk in Delhi. He longs to escape his dreary existence and looks for shortcuts- with astrologers, tarot readers, & fake fakirs basically believing anything except himself, despite his father figure Dada's (Mithun Chakravorty) best efforts. His redeeming moment arrives when two strangers from China claim him as a reincarnation of a war hero in the past and take him to China. Sidhu now dreams of wine, women and a princely existence in foreign lands. Along the way he meets Sakhi (Deepika Padukone), Ms. Tele Shoppers Media (Ms TSM) who has embarked on a journey to pay homage to the land of her birth and her believed to be dead father and twin sister Suzy (who worked for Hojo not knowing that he tried to kill her father). Initially Sidhu through a series of lucky coincidences manages to sidestep being beaten by Hojo's men but finally Hojo catches up with him and exposes him as the country buffoon that he really is by finishing off Dada. Sidhu has the fire of revenge in his belly and finds the one man who will make him a Kungfu expert and set the village free, the Police Chief Chiang, who actually is the father of Sakhi and Suzy. Chiang has lost his memory after an incident with Hojo, but his Kung Fu skills are still intact. Gradually he recollects all his memories and agrees to take Sidhu as his apprentice. Armed with his Sifu(master), faith in himself and the love of the fair Sakhi Sidhu sets forth to conquer all!

Slumdog millionaire

>> Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British drama film directed by Danny Boyle and written by Simon Beaufoy. It is based on the novel Q and A by Indian author and diplomat Vikas Swarup.

Loveleen Tandan, who began as the film's casting director, was later appointed by Boyle as the co-director.

Set and filmed in India, Slumdog Millionaire follows the story of a young man from the slums of Mumbai who appears on a game show and exceeds people's expectations, arousing the suspicions of the game show host and of law enforcement officials.

After screenings at the Telluride Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, Slumdog Millionaire had a limited North American release on 12 November 2008 to critical acclaim and awards success. It will be released in India on 23 January 2009.

Slumdog Millionaire won five of the six awards it was nominated for at the Critics Choice Awards, and all four nominations awarded at the Golden Globes including best director, picture, screenplay and score.

Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), a former street child from Mumbai (Bombay), is being interrogated by the police. He is a contestant on Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, hosted by Prem Kumar (noted Bollywood actor Anil Kapoor). Jamal has made it to the final question, but has been accused of cheating.

The explanation of how he knew the answers leads us through the history of his short, hectic, but full life, including scenes of obtaining the autograph of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan; the death of his mother during Hindu-Muslim riots in the slums; and how he and his brother Salim (Madhur Mittal) befriended an orphaned girl, Latika (Freida Pinto). Jamal refers to Salim and himself as Athos and Porthos, and Latika as the third Musketeer, whose name they do not know, not having read far enough in the book.

Living on the trash heaps, they are discovered by Maman (Ankur Vikal), a gangster who runs an orphanage and then uses the children to beg and bring in money. Salim is groomed to become a part of Maman’s operation, and is tasked to bring Jamal so he can be blinded to improve his income potential as a blind singer. Salim rebels against Maman to protect his brother, and the three children try to escape, but only Salim and Jamal are successful. Latika is re-captured by Maman's organization and raised as a culturally talented prostitute whose virginity will fetch a high price.

The brothers eke out a living, traveling on top of trains, selling goods, pretending to be tour guides at the Taj Mahal, and pickpocketing. Jamal eventually insists that they return to Mumbai since he wishes to locate Latika. When he finds her working as a dancer in a brothel, the brothers attempt to rescue her, but Maman intrudes, and in the resulting conflict Salim draws a gun and kills Maman. Salim then uses the fact that he killed Maman to obtain a job with Javed (Mahesh Manjrekar), a rival crime lord. Salim claims Latika as his own, and when Jamal protests, Salim threatens to kill him and Latika intervenes, accepting her fate with Salim.

Years later, Jamal has a position as a "chai-wallah," (a boy or young man who serves tea) at a call centre. When he is asked to cover for a co-worker for a couple of minutes, he searches the database for Salim and Latika. He gets in touch with Salim, who has become a high-ranking lieutenant in Javed’s organization. Salim invites Jamal to live with him and, after following Salim to Javed's house, he sees Latika living there. He talks his way in as the new dishwasher and tries to convince Latika to leave. She rebuffs his advances, but he promises to be at the train station every day at 5 p.m. One day Latika attempts to rendezvous with him, but is recaptured by Javed's men and Salim. One slashes her cheek with a knife, scarring her.

Drillbit taylor

>> Tuesday, January 13, 2009

On their first day of high school, two boys, Ryan (Troy Gentile) and Wade (Nate Hartley), are embarrassed by the fact that they happen to wear the same shirt. Wade sticks up for a smaller fellow geek, Emmit Oosterhaus (David Dorfman), who is being shoved into a locker by bullies Filkins (Alex Frost) and Ronnie.

As a result, the violent bullies Filkins and Ronnie terrorize all three every chance they get.

The trio complain to the principal (Stephen Root), but their concerns fall upon deaf ears. Filkins is furious that the boys have squealed on him, and even chases them with his car. Wade suggests to his friends that they pool their money together to hire a bodyguard who can protect them. They place an ad on the Internet, and select Drillbit Taylor (Owen Wilson) out of several candidates, mainly because he is the cheapest.

Taylor pretends to be a martial arts master and mercenary, but in reality he is just a homeless beggar who sleeps under a picnic table, showers on a public beach (nude in the open, visible from the highway), and eats out of a dumpster. His real intention of becoming their bodyguard is to rob them and get enough money to go to Canada and start living there, where he believes he will be paid to accept land.

After complaints from the boys that he is not there when they need him (especially after Filkins punched Wade in the face after Ryan humiliated him in a public rap battle) the boys lend him a suit of one of their fathers, and he accompanies them to school. There he is taken by the school staff to be a substitute teacher, falls in love with pretty teacher Lisa (Leslie Mann), and decides to actually start working as such.

He starts really liking the boys and decides to try to really defend them, and teach them also to defend themselves. After Taylor's criminal friends steal a lot from Wade's house, Taylor fights them and returns everything to the house. One morning Ronnie's mother drives him to school, and he sees Taylor taking his shower at the beach; the mother knows he is a beggar. Ronnie tells this to Filkins, who now knows that Taylor is not a real teacher, and punches him.

Taylor is forced to confess to the boys that his real name is Bob and he went A.W.O.L. from the U.S. Army after a few days of service. The trio fire him and demand their belongings back. The parents soon find out and take things up with the principal. As a result, Taylor is a wanted man and things with Filkins are still not settled. After a confrontation with Filkins, who spoiled Wade's chance to ask out Brooke (Valerie Tian), an Asian girl who he met on the first day of school, Ryan and Wade, who have gained self-confidence, challenge Filkins to a fight.

Filkins agrees if they come to his house for the fight (Filkins is an emancipated minor). During the fight Emmit (who previously abandoned Ryan and Wade) shows up for the last part of the fight delivering many small punches to Filkins' leg and briefly putting him in a submission hold. At this point, Ronnie also shows up and punches Emmit, leaving Filkins free to beat up Wade.

After Wade takes several punches to the face and stomach, Drillbit shows up and continues to take punches from Filkins, until he finds out that Filkins is not a minor, after which Drillbit displays considerable skill and delivers several kicks and punches to Filkin's face. During the group's celebration, the police show up and Drillbit, a U.S. Army deserter, is forced to flee. Filkins runs out with a samurai sword and throws it at Ryan, Wade and Emmett, which Drillbit stops just in time by catching it (giving him a gash on his hand and slicing his pinky 1/2 off).

Filkins is then arrested and sent to his parents in Hong Kong, and Drillbit is taken to the hospital, then prison. Three weeks later, Taylor is out of prison and celebrating with the boys and Lisa. After the credits, Taylor is seen working in the school as a nurse. A boy walks into the room with a bloody nose, and Taylor asks him for names, assuring him that the bully will be dealt with.

City of ember

>> Saturday, January 10, 2009

City of Ember is a science fiction-fantasy film directed by Gil Kenan and based on the 2003 novel of the same name by Jeanne Duprau.

The movie introduction explains that the City of Ember is a fully-contained city built to house a human community for 200 years as a shelter from an unspecified disaster. Having long since passed the 200-year mark, Ember's food supplies are becoming depleted and blackouts are increasingly frequent and longer-lasting, as the hydroelectric generator that powers the city has deteriorated. Much of the knowledge and technology from the city's near-mythic Builders and earlier generations has been lost.

Two 12-year-olds, Lina Mayfleet (Saoirse Ronan) and Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway), who live in the City of Ember are graduating from school. They begin their assigned jobs with Lina as one of the messengers who deliver communications around the city following the collapse of the telephone system. Doon is a technician in the Pipeworks of the hydroelectric generator. Lina witnesses the city's decay as she relays messages, and Doon learns that the Pipeworks are held together with increasing amounts of patchwork. Nobody knows in detail how any of the city's systems work. After a major malfunction of the generator during the city's annual celebration, Lina and Doon conclude that Ember is in danger of imminent collapse. With the city's adult population either largely ignorant of their plight or cowed by the corrupt Mayor Cole (Bill Murray), Lina and Doon search for the clues left by the Builders showing the citizens of Ember how to save themselves.

The mayor, understanding the gravity of the city's situation, has been stockpiling food in a secret bunker to guarantee his own survival. He suspects that Lina, a descendant of an earlier mayor who died in office, and Doon may be in possession of lost secrets about Ember and orders them arrested. The pair escapes and begins their egress from the city with instructions left by the Builders. They discover a means of evacuation from the city and receive unexpected assistance from Doon's elderly mentor from the pipe works (Martin Landau). Initially they despair at the enveloping darkness described in Ember's folklore when they emerge from their journey, but when the sun rises they discover that light has returned to the skies and the planet has recovered. They also see the lights of Ember deep below the surface and realize they had lived in an underground city. Lina and Doon drop a message tied to a rock through a crevasse down to Ember telling the other citizens how to leave the city, where it is found by Loris Harrow, one of the few adults cognizant of the city's plight.

Wanted

>> Monday, January 5, 2009

A young man named Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) works at a dead-end desk job with an overbearing boss, takes anti-anxiety medication for panic attacks, and has a live-in girlfriend who cheats on him with his best friend. He speaks of how his father left when he was just one week old. He wonders if when he was born his father looked into his eyes and saw a failure.
Elsewhere, an assassin called "Mr. X" (David O'Hara) is targeted by a group of snipers, whom he easily dispatches. However, he finds himself standing over an 'X' on the ground, and is killed by a rogue named Cross (Thomas Kretschmann) with an untraceable bullet. During one of his trips to the pharmacy, Gibson is told by a mysterious woman named Fox (Angelina Jolie) about how his father was killed, and that the killer, Cross, is behind him. Cross and Fox engage in a spectacular shoot-out followed by a car chase in the streets of Chicago.
Fox brings Gibson to the headquarters of The Fraternity, a thousand-year-old secret society of assassins. The group's leader, Sloan (Morgan Freeman), invites Gibson to follow in his father's footsteps as an assassin. To show him what he's capable of, Gunsmith (another assasin and member of The Fraternity) holds a gun to Gibson's head and has him shoot the wings off several flies. Gibson has a panic attack and does as asked. Sloan explains that his heart beats around 400 times a minute when he's stressed, sending massive amounts of adrenaline into his bloodstream, and that he can learn to control it. Gibson is initially reluctant and returns to work, only to finally snap after being shown a new possible life; his online bank account balance is over 3 million dollars. He tells off his boss in front of the entire office. On his way out, he hits his friend across the face with a keyboard. Fox is waiting outside to take him back to the Fraternity headquarters - an unassuming textile mill.
After much training, Gibson is shown the Loom of Fate, a loom ,or instrument of god, that gives the names of the targets through binary code hidden in weaving errors of the fabric. Like god and the Apostles, those the loom identifies are apparently destined to cause tragedy in the future; thus, killing them spares those the person would have harmed, so assassins are doing good. But only Sloan sees and interprets the names that "Fate" wants to kill, and after today, Gibson will never again be allowed in the room.
Alone with Fox, Gibson expresses doubt he can kill people. Fox shares a story about "a little girl" (herself) whose father, a judge handling a racketeering case, was burned alive by a hired killer (the target) as she was forced to watch. The man then burned his initials on her neck. If someone had killed the hired killer, as the loom had ordered, her father wouldn't have died. Preventing such tragedy is now her mission.
After several routine missions and a chance meeting with Cross, in which Cross shoots him in the arm with a deliberately traceable bullet, Gibson becomes impatient and demands to be allowed to avenge his father. Sloan grants his wish, saying that Cross's name had come up on the loom, but then secretly gives Fox a mission to kill Gibson, saying that Gibson's name had come up as well.

Saw the big "North American Premiere" in Dallas last night at Studio Movie Grill. Lots of cast and crew were there; it was different since we don't usually have this kind of excitement in Big D.Lea Thompson and crew did a wonderful job of keeping us entertained, but the Spanish speaking Mr. Vargas (played by Everett Sifuentes) stole the show. He was adorable and hilarious. Subtitles were not provided, but that was much of the charm. There will be no Oscar nominations, but for a new production company getting off the ground, a cast and crew that consisted of a lot of 'no-name' actors, and limited special effects (by today's standards), the movie was very entertaining and had a lot of great lines.

Lake view terrace

Critical reaction to Lakeview Terrace has been mixed. Rotten Tomatoes reported that 44% of critics gave positive reviews based on 125 reviews. On Metacritic, critics gave a 46% approval rating based on 28 reviews. Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film a very positive review, awarding it a score of four stars and saying: "Some will find it exciting. Some will find it an opportunity for an examination of conscience. Some will leave feeling vaguely uneasy. Some won't like it and will be absolutely sure why they don't, but their reasons will not agree. Some will hate elements that others can't even see. Some will only see a thriller. I find movies like this alive and provoking, and I'm exhilarated to have my thinking challenged at every step of the way."

Mick LaSalle of the San Francisco Chronicle also enjoyed the film, giving it three stars out of four, saying: "In its overall shape and message, Lakeview Terrace is a conventional suspense thriller, but the details kick it up a notch. ... The fun of Lakeview Terrace is not in what happens but in how it happens." J.R. Jones of the Chicago Reader called the film "one of the toughest racial dramas to come out of Hollywood since the fires died down—much tougher, for instance, than Paul Haggis's hand-wringing Oscar winner Crash."

Dennis Harvey of Variety said that Lakeview Terrace "delivers fairly tense and engrossing drama" but "succumb[s] to thriller convention."Anthony Lane of The New Yorker said that "the first hour of the film ... feels dangerous, necessary, and rife with comic disturbance," but added that "the later stages ... overheat and spill into silliness." James Berardinelli of ReelViews gave the film two stars out of four, saying that "the first two-thirds of Lakeview Terrace offer a little more subtlety and complexity than the seemingly straightforward premise would afford, but the climax is loud, dumb, generic, and over-the-top."

Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe said that "the movie might have something to say about black racism, but the conversations go nowhere, and the clichés of the genre take over." Sura Wood of The Hollywood Reporter said: "[The idea of] a black actor cast as the virulent bigot, with the object of his campaign of harassment the young interracial couple who move in next door, could be viewed as a novel twist. But the film, absent a sense of place and populated by repellent or weak characters, soon devolves into an increasingly foul litany of events."[10] Joe Morgenstern of the Wall Street Journal gave it one half of a star out of five, and called the film a "joyless and airless suspense thriller."

On its opening weekend, the film grossed $15 million placing it at #1 at the U.S. box office. As of November 2, 2008, the film has grossed $39.2 million domestically and $3.2 million internationally making $42.4 million worldwide.

Passengers

But despite her strong performance in Rachel Getting Married, she exhibits an obvious case of collecting a paycheck in Passengers.Passengers is released under Sony's TriStar banner, which cinebuffs will immediately recognize as an odorous omen. The "best" of their recent slate includes 88 Minutes and I Know Who Killed Me.Hathaway plays crack therapist Claire Summers, and her current assignment is to counsel survivors of a horrible plane crash. And while these poor souls didn't land on an island and battle The Others, they are nevertheless a frazzled bunch. Some of them seem to remember what caused the plane's explosion, whereas others can't remember a thing. It's all very would-be mysterious.Claire develops a special relationship with a survivor named Eric (Patrick Wilson). And by "special" I mean he flirts with her a lot until she inexplicably falls madly in love with him. But despite Eric's charming demeanor, he still is affected like the other survivors, and holds a key to unraveling the secret behind the crash.Passengers is that unfortunate bad movie in that it's just completely boring. Some bad movies you can at least enjoy on some level because their ineptitude leaves a lot to be mocked. Not this film: it simply meanders from uninspired romance to fourth-rate supernatural thriller with all the excitement of a C-SPAN retrospective.Similarly, Hathaway's performance is nothing special. She just goes through the motions and has that demeanor of "is this thing over yet?" The one time she heightens her emotion (when the you-knew-it-was-coming twist is revealed), her anguish is meant to be harrowing, but comes off instead as laughable.Thankfully for Hathaway, Passengers was barely marketed (if it was marketed at all) and hardly anyone saw it or will care to remember it. (I'm sure Hathaway herself forgot she even shot the thing).

Seven Pounds

This film centers around Smith, who has previously desperately tried to Smith from comedy to action, and he has pulled it off. But he has never been good at drama, until now. I was never a fan of "In the Pursuit of Happiness", mainly because of Smiths acting talent. But here his acting talent is purely the reason I liked it. The rest of the cast was poorly chosen and the script poorly wrote, but Will Smith still makes something of this dull plot and at times dull film, there is very little character development to what is expected to a film with such a plot. I did not expect much when I was invited to a private screening of the film but I was surprised, although the film has little interest in each scene Will Smith pulls it through. I told him what I though on the film and he took interest in my comments he said "his talent usually saves interest deprived films", although in a sarcastic tone of voice.

This film has a feel-good factor which is the main selling point if your wondering what film to see, I believe true drama fans will be greatly satisfied along with Will Smith fans, but overall it is a good film which I found deeply entertaining, although I would not pay to see this again, I do recommend spending your money to 'try it out'.

Eagle Eye

>> Monday, December 15, 2008

The United States armed forces have a lead on a suspected terrorist in the Middle East, but as the man is a recluse, getting a positive ID proves difficult, and the DOD's computer system recommends that the mission be aborted. The Secretary of Defense (Michael Chiklis) agrees with the abort recommendation, but the President orders the mission be carried out anyway. This turns into a political backlash when all those killed turn out to be civilians, and retaliatory bombings are carried out in response.

Jerry Shaw (Shia LaBeouf) is a Stanford University dropout who lacks direction and faces financial difficulty. He finds out his twin brother Ethan, an Air Force lieutenant, is dead. Following the funeral, he goes to withdraw some money from an ATM and is surprised to see that he has $750,000 in his account. When he returns home, he finds his apartment filled with a large amount of weapons, explosives, and forged documents. He receives a phone call from an unknown woman, who explains that the FBI is about to apprehend him in thirty seconds and that he must escape. Not believing her, he is caught by the FBI Agent Thomas Morgan (Billy Bob Thornton) and Air Force Office of Special Investigations Special Agent Zoe Perez (Rosario Dawson). The unknown woman arranges Jerry's escape and has him join up with single mother Rachel Holloman (Michelle Monaghan). Holloman is being coerced into helping by the woman, who threatens to kill her son, Sam, a trumpet player on his way to Washington, D.C. from Chicago for a band recital.

The woman helps the pair to avoid the police and FBI units, demonstrating the ability to remotely control virtually any networked device, such as traffic lights, cell phones, and even automated cranes. While Jerry and Rachel follow her instructions, the woman has a crystal explosive made into a necklace and its sound-based trigger placed inside Sam's trumpet. Jerry and Rachel are led from Chicago to Washington, D.C. via Indianapolis and Dayton through various means. They reach a store the woman asked them to go. The woman decides to introduce herself to them: she is a top secret supercomputer called ARIA tasked with gathering intelligence from all over the world. ARIA can control virtually anything electronic and has been monitoring both their lives and brought both Jerry and Rachel to her.

In light of the mistake made by the President at the beginning of the film, ARIA has decided that the executive branch is a threat to the public good and must be eliminated. ARIA plans to destroy the President's cabinet, and calls this Operation Guillotine. It has decided to leave the Secretary of Defense, who agreed with its recommendation to abort, as the successor to the presidency. She does not reveal this to Jerry or Rachel, merely explaining that she is trying to help the people of the United States.

At the Pentagon, where ARIA is housed, Agent Perez discovers that Ethan worked as a technician for the computer and locked it down to prevent ARIA from carrying out her plan. Perez warns the Secretary of Defense and they discuss the situation in a sealed room to prevent ARIA from hearing their conversation. Jerry and Rachel arrive at the Pentagon and are led to the supercomputer, where ARIA forces Jerry to impersonate Ethan and use an override code allowing her to go ahead with the plan. Jerry observes CCTV footage displaying Ethan's fatal car crash (due to sabotaged traffic lights), realizing ARIA orchestrated Ethan's death since his twin could have stopped her. She then instructs Rachel to eliminate Jerry to prevent the lock from being reinstated, but Rachel cannot bring herself to do it. Rachel is led out of the building by ARIA while Jerry is caught by Agent Morgan. Having been warned by Agent Perez, Morgan believes Jerry's story and takes him to the United States Capitol. On their way, however, ARIA sends an MQ-9 Reaper UCAV after them. Agent Morgan sacrifices himself to destroy the craft and save Jerry.

The Day The Earth Stood Still

>> Sunday, December 14, 2008

A representative of an alien race that went through drastic evolution to survive its own climate change, Klaatu (Keanu Reeves) comes to Earth to assess whether humanity can reverse the environmental damage they have inflicted on their own planet. Klaatu himself already has a negative opinion of humans, and when detained by Regina Jackson, the United States Secretary of Defense, and barred from speaking to the United Nations, he decides they shall be exterminated so the planet – with its rare ability to sustain complex life – can survive. At Klaatu's command, Gort turns into a swarm of nanites that destroy everything in its path. Dr. Helen Benson (Jennifer Connelly) and her stepson Jacob (Jaden Smith) finally convince Klaatu that humans can change their ways and are worth saving. Convinced by the two, Klaatu has them take him to the sphere in Central Park, warning them that even if he manages to stop Gort there will be a price to the human way of life. At the sphere, the nanobot cloud arrives before they can reach the sphere and they have to hide under a bridge. There it is revealed that Jacob has been infected by the nanites. Klaatu saves him, then sacrifices his physical form to stop Gort by walking through the nanites to the sphere and touching it. His actions cause the sphere to emit a massive EMP which fries Gort, saving humanity, but at the price of all of Earth's technology becoming useless. Afterward, the sphere leaves Earth. Jacob's last comment might hint that Klaatu did not die but rather was a part of the sphere's energy.

Before its release, The Day the Earth Stood Still was nominated for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound at the 2008 Satellite Awards. On the film's December 12, 2008 release, the Deep Space Communications Network at Cape Canaveral was to transmit the film to Alpha Centauri.

The film received generally negative reviews. Based on 126 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, only 22% of reviewers gave the film positive write-ups; the website stated the majority found the film "heavy on special effects, but without a coherent story at its base, [the film] is subpar re-imagining of the 1951 science-fiction classic". Similarly, Metacritic's collection of 24 reviews showed an average score of 39 out of 100.

The film grossed $11,600,000 on its opening night, December 12, 2008.

Babylon A.D

A few decades in the future, a mercenary named Toorop (Vin Diesel) accepts a contract from a Russian mobster, Gorsky, who instructs him to bring a young woman only known as Aurora (Mélanie Thierry) to New York. In order to reach his goal, Gorsky gave Toorop a variety of weapons as well as a UN passport that has to be injected under the skin of the neck. Toorop, along with the girl and her guardian nun Sister Rebeka (Michelle Yeoh), travel from the Noelite Convent where they lived across Russia to reach America.

The towns and cities of Russia have been turned into dangerous, over populated slums by war and terrorist activity, forcing Toorop, Aurora, and Rebeka to face dangers of the human element, all the while fleeing from an unknown group of mercenaries claiming to have been sent by Aurora's supposedly dead father. The stress of humanity's situation causes Aurora to act out in strange ways that neither Toorop, nor Rebeka can explain. On one such occasion, Aurora seemed, for no reason, to panic and run from a crowded train station, just before it was bombed.

Later, they were forced to board a submarine that carried refugees to Canada. There were too many refugees to take at once, so the submarine was forced to leave some behind, even if it came to shooting them. Aurora, infuriated by the loss of life, suddenly knew how to operate the thirty year old submarine, without having ever learned about it.

Sister Rebeka explains to Toorop that Aurora could speak nineteen different languages by the age of two, and always seemed to know things she had never learned. When, three months before leaving with Toorop, she had begun acting out in ways she never had before. This occurred after a visit by a Noelite doctor who had administered a pill to Aurora. The doctor told her to go to America, and arranged for Toorop to take them.

The Air I Breathe

The Air I Breathe is a 2008 drama film and the directorial debut from Korean-American filmmaker Jieho Lee, who co-wrote the script with Bob DeRosa. It stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Brendan Fraser, Cecilia Suárez, Clark Gregg, Emile Hirsch, Forest Whitaker, John Cho, Julie Delpy, Kelly Hu, Kevin Bacon and Andy Garcia. The film was financed by NALA Investments through its production company NALA Films. The film was released on January 25th 2008 in the US.

The concept of the film is based on an ancient Chinese proverb that breaks life down into four emotional cornerstones – Happiness (Whitaker), Pleasure (Fraser), Sorrow (Gellar), and Love (Bacon). The proverb speaks of these emotions, not as isolated fragments of feelings, but as elements that make up the whole of the human existence. Each of the four main protagonists is based on one of the four emotions; and like the proverb their paths are inextricably linked to each other.

None of the four main characters' actual names are mentioned in the whole film, although Gellar's character's stage name, "Trista", is mentioned several times. ("trista" means "sad" in Catalan, "tristis" means "sad" in Latin and "triste" means sad in French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.)

Forest Whitaker plays a bank employee who loves butterflies. When he accidentally overhears a sure bet at a horse race he decides to bet $50,000, borrowing from the bookies. Unfortunately he loses the bet and gets caught by Andy Garcia (Fingers) who runs that gambling/betting pool.

Fingers derives his name from his habit of cutting off the fingers of those who don’t pay back their debts. When Fingers threatens Whitaker that he will cut off his fingers if he doesn’t pay his debt of $50,000, Whitaker decides to rob a bank. After fleeing to a roof the police order him to drop his gun. He does not comply, throwing his bag with money into the street, and is killed by the police. When he hits the ground his coat is spread out making him look like a butterfly.

10,000 BC

A remote mountain range provides a home for a tribe of hunter-gatherers called the Yagahl, who survive by trapping and killing mammoths, which they call the "Mannak". Here, the young hunter D'Leh has found his heart's desire — the beautiful companion named Evolet, known for her unique blue eyes, whom the Yagahl had found as an orphaned girl, a wise woman of the tribe informs of a future prophecy the girl will bring to the tribe. When the mannak come, D'Leh accidentally wins the "White Spear" which is given to the killer of the mammoth. He also wins Evolet in marriage, but feels he deserves neither, because he won by accident.

When another band of mysterious horse-riding raiders called the "Four Legged Demons" attack the Yaghal camp, they enslave Evolet (along with many others), D'Leh leads a small group of hunters south to pursue the raiders to the end of their known world to save her. The band of rescuing warriors come in contact with terror birds in the jungle. In this encounter, Tic'Tic gets wounded and later recovers, but some of the rescuing hunters composed of Baku, his friend, are stolen by the raiders. Then, in the desert, they encounter gazelles, Lappet-faced Vultures, and a larger saber toothed cat, similar in appearance to a Smilodon but larger and more tiger-like in appearance. Along their journey they meet tribes of warriors, who have also had loved ones enslaved by the raiders.

D'Leh and his mentor Tic'Tic befriend Nakudu, leader of the Naku tribe, whose son was taken and wife murdered. Then Nakudu tells D'Leh of their prophecy: that whoever talks to the "Spear-Tooth" (saber-tooth) will help free their people. D'Leh (while hunting for food), had earlier saved a saber-tooth from drowning in a trap which also resulted in D'Leh freeing himself. The saber-tooth then spared his life, and he realizes the prophecy was about him. Nakudu explains that his loved ones were taken in the "Great Red Birds," or ships with large red sails, to the "Mountains of the Gods," from which no one has ever returned. Tic'Tic also takes into account that maybe D'Leh like his father, has a greater destiny than most men. Then they come together with other tribes, who agree to form a coalition and march in pursuit of the captors.
