Passengers

Anne Hathaway has enjoyed a steady career since her breakthrough in 2001's The Princess Diaries. But despite her strong performance in Rachel Getting Married, she exhibits an obvious case of collecting a paycheck in Passengers.Passengers is released under Sony's TriStar banner, which cinebuffs will immediately recognize as an odorous omen. If TriStar was once the little sister of Columbia, it has now become the bastard stepchild. The "best" of their recent slate includes 88 Minutes and I Know Who Killed Me.Hathaway plays crack therapist Claire Summers, and her current assignment is to counsel survivors of a horrible plane crash. And while these poor souls didn't land on an island and battle The Others, they are nevertheless a frazzled bunch. Some of them seem to remember what caused the plane's explosion, whereas others can't remember a thing. It's all very would-be mysterious.Claire develops a special relationship with a survivor named Eric (Patrick Wilson). And by "special" I mean he flirts with her a lot until she inexplicably falls madly in love with him. But despite Eric's charming demeanor, he still is affected like the other survivors, and holds a key to unraveling the secret behind the crash.Passengers is that unfortunate bad movie in that it's just completely boring. Some bad movies you can at least enjoy on some level because their ineptitude leaves a lot to be mocked. Not this film: it simply meanders from uninspired romance to fourth-rate supernatural thriller with all the excitement of a C-SPAN retrospective.Similarly, Hathaway's performance is nothing special. She just goes through the motions and has that demeanor of "is this thing over yet?" The one time she heightens her emotion (when the you-knew-it-was-coming twist is revealed), her anguish is meant to be harrowing, but comes off instead as laughable.Thankfully for Hathaway, Passengers was barely marketed (if it was marketed at all) and hardly anyone saw it or will care to remember it. (I'm sure Hathaway herself forgot she even shot the thing).
